Scientific Affairs Department
The Scientific Affairs Department is a central unit affiliated with the Office of the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs. It oversees research activities, scientific innovations, conferences, and academic events. It also facilitates procedures related to patents and academic sabbaticals.
The Scientific Affairs Department Consists of:
• Scientific Research Division
This division manages the ministerial research plan program, which includes a comprehensive database of all faculty research at the university. The database contains researchers’ names, co-authors, research titles, and full publication details. The research plans for all colleges and university directorates are unified and submitted to the Ministry every three months, with monthly updates to the system.
Duties include:
- Entering and updating all faculty research monthly in the system.
- Issuing research verification letters for academic promotion.
- Issuing virtual library verification letters for promotion.
- Preparing commitment forms related to the virtual library.
• National Program Division
A monthly database submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education that includes the university’s activities, locally and internationally consulted research, indexed publications, authored books, theses and dissertations, community service activities, research and study scholarships, local and international agreements, and patents.
• Documentation Unit
Responsible for the ministerial “Nadwaty” program, which documents workshops, seminars, discussion panels, and conferences.
• Journals Unit
Follows up on research publication in the university’s academic journals.
• Advisory Offices Unit
Oversees the operation and activities of the university’s consulting offices.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Scientific Affairs Department
- Supervising and organizing the university’s scientific activities in cooperation with the colleges, including conferences, seminars, workshops, and discussion panels.
- Documenting faculty participation in scientific events held inside and outside the university.
- Recommending letters of appreciation from the University President for publications in high-impact journals (Scopus, Thomson Reuters/Clarivate, Science, Nature), and letters of appreciation from the Assistant for Scientific Affairs for publications in reputable local or international journals.
- Following up on the proceedings of the Scientific Rigor and Academic Accreditation Committee.
- Monitoring the periodic classification of university journals and working to establish new journals.
- Assisting researchers with registration for the Iraqi Science Day awards and informing them of updates.
- Following up on research and development assessment forms for university employees and researchers.
- Monitoring progress of the university’s pioneering research projects.
- Organizing and supervising academic sabbatical procedures (inside and outside Iraq).
- Nominating distinguished faculty and staff for participation in scientific events inside and outside Iraq.
- Following up on curriculum development in university colleges.
- Managing the academic staff development program and research fellowship program for faculty abroad.
- Supporting researchers in registering on global academic platforms such as ResearchGate, ORCID, and Google Scholar.
- Monitoring the work of research teams formed by university directives and fostering collaboration with other universities and official institutions to establish joint research teams.
- Submitting the annual academic and research presentations (seminars) of university faculty to the Supervision and Scientific Evaluation Authority.
