The university's participation in the National Conference on Integrating Sustainable Development Goals into Education
The University of Fallujah participated in the activities of the National Conference on Integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Education, organized by the Together Association for the Protection of Humans and the Environment, in cooperation with the National Security Advisory, the Beshdar Organization for Sustainable Development, and in coordination with Al-Nahrain Center for Strategic Studies. The conference was attended by a distinguished group of officials and specialists from various ministries and governmental institutions.
The University of Fallujah was represented at the conference by the Head of the Sustainable Development Unit, Assistant Professor Dr. Alaa Faiq Habib, who contributed to discussing the main themes and drafting the final recommendations. This participation reflects the University’s commitment to supporting sustainable development pathways and strengthening its academic presence in nationally significant strategic issues.
The conference also witnessed notable international participation, including representatives from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Canadian Tawasul Program, in addition to representatives from international organizations and interested companies. Several public and private universities also took part, highlighting the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in supporting educational sector reform.
The conference aimed to establish practical mechanisms for integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into curricula and educational policies, transforming them from a theoretical framework into measurable applications within schools and universities. The focus was placed on embedding concepts of environmental sustainability, social justice, active citizenship, and the green economy, as well as building the capacities of educational staff to ensure sustainable implementation.
The discussions emphasized the importance of linking sustainable education to national security and societal stability, developing curricula, training teachers, and introducing practical activities such as tree-planting campaigns, recycling initiatives, and school-based environmental programs. The adoption of clear performance indicators for monitoring and evaluation processes was also highlighted.
This conference represents a strategic step led by civil society in partnership with state institutions—through the Together Association for the Protection of Humans and the Environment—to support a long-term educational reform path aligned with Iraq’s international commitments under the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and to reinforce the role of education as a fundamental pillar of security, development, and societal stability.
